What Not to Miss in Zante
Encapsulating the enduring beauty of Greece, stunning Zakynthos - the
largest island in the Ionian - offers visitors a plethora of unforgettable
sights, attractions and experiences that are truly unique.
Agios Markos Square
Filled with Venetian glamor, Agios Markos Square is the
epicentre of the island’s social life, famous for the 1797
revolution resulting in the burning of the infamous Libro d’Oro
which resulted in abolishing the hereditary privileges of the
nobles. Sit back and relax in any one of the square’s cafes and
bars and make sure you visit the Museum of Dionysios Solomos
and the Eminent People of Zakynthos. Spanning two floors, this
folklore museum showcases important manuscripts, 17th century
artwork (furniture, embroidery, engravings, jewelry and musical
instruments), original music scores and handwritten notes and
works by notable theatrical writers.
Giostra di Zante
Mentioned throughout history and literature, the Giostra di
Zante is one of the island’s oldest events, probably dating back
to 1500. It is a competition that is based on skill and expert
horsemanship, in which competitors must successfully collect
a hoop-ring using a spear. Historically, it was attended by the
noble families of the island whose names were registered in the
so-called “Golden Book” or “Libro d’Oro” whilst also attracting
crowds of people from all walks of life on the island. Today, all of
the Ionian Islands participate in the historical event’s parade and
the competition along with competitors from other European
countries such as Italy, San Marino, the Czech Republic and
Croatia. (giostradizante.gr)
Admire Navagio and the Blue Caves
A tour around the island via a boat excursion or by private
sailboat is mandatory as it’s the only way can you capture the
world famous, iconic shipwreck on Navagio Beach which
became famous as recently as 1982 when the MV Panagiotis,
rumoured to be carrying contraband cigarettes, ran aground
during stormy weather and bad visibility. Since then, it has
been photographed thousands of times due to the beauty of the
landscape juxtaposed against the rusting decaying ship. Prepare
your selfie sticks to take the most instagrammable snapshots
from a distance or allow your drones to take off.
