FLAG OF GREECE:
ONE SYMBOL - 200 THE NATIONAL FLAG OF GREECE, referred to
as the “blue and white” or the “sky blue and white”,
OBJECTS consists of nine horizontal stripes of blue alternating
with white with a blue canton in the upper hoist cor-
ner bearing a white cross. Officially adopted by the
country’s first national assembly in 1822 in Epidav-
ros, following the beginning of the Greek War of In-
dependence against the Ottomans beginning in 1821,
the flag symbolizes the 200th anniversary (1821-1921)
of Greece’s independence.
The non-profit organization Flag of Greece is cele-
brating this landmark anniversary with its first round
of exhibitions which will showcase 200 objects from
its collection to the general public for the very first
time. Standing by its objective which is the research
and safeguarding of art, collectibles and historical
documents, all related to the Greek flag, the audio-
visual exhibition “Flag of Greece: One Symbol - 200
Objects” will be hosted on the island of Santorini this
summer. On display from August 1st to September
30th, at the Gallery Marinera, located in the island’s
capital Thira, the caldera location provides the per-
fect backdrop with which to showcase the 200 objects
from the collection.
Drawing on Greece’s freedom and the Greek flag as a
source of inspiration, the collection on display in the
“Flag of Greece: One Symbol - 200 Objects” exhibi-
tion promises an artistic journey highlighting the coun-
try’s history and artistic expression. Starting from the
200th anniversary of the independent Greek nation
1821-2021, through to the present day, the exhibition
represents an important touristic and cultural refer-
ence for visitors to the island of Santorini. Investigat-
