CHAL KIDIKI

What Not to Miss in Chalkidiki & Thessaloniki

From the Modern Art to the Gold of Macedon
The Momus-Museum of Modern Art is one of the 4 museums
that have been united to create the Metropolitan Organization
of Museums of Visual Arts Thessaloniki (Momus), based in
Thessaloniki. (21 Kolokotroni Str. Moni Lazariston, Stavroupoli.
Tel.: 2310-589143). The second visit must be dedicated to the
Gold of the Macedonians. The Derveni Krater, the masterpiece
of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, was discovered
in 1962 inside the cist grave B of the Derveni cemetery, along
with numerous other valuable finds. It contained the remains of a
cremation, with a gold coin of Philip II, a gold ring, two gold pins
and a bronze, gilded wreath. The mouth of the krater was covered
by a bronze strainer-like lid, which was used to strain wine. A gold
myrtle wreath was placed on top of the vessel. Since its founding ORESTIS KOURAKIS © ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF THESSALONIKI, HELLENIC MINISTRY OF CULTURE & SPORTS
in 1962, the museum operates as the metropolitan museum of
Macedonia, which systematically keeps, preserves, studies, displays,
and showcases antiquities from the entire Macedonian region.
The granting of autonomous status in 2001, as a distinct regional
unit of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, along with the complete
renovation of the museum building redefined the museum’s
philosophy. The building by architect Patroklos Karantinos is one
of the best examples of public architecture in Greece, dating to the
second half of the 20th century. With its austere form and clean
geometry, the structure combines features of modernism and the
Classical Greek architectural tradition. (Manolis Andronikou 6,

 Kavourotrypes
This series of virgin bays are situated in a pine forest, covered with
white, soft sand on the east side of the second foot of Chalkidiki,
on the lush peninsula of Sithonia. Large, white rocks emerge right
and left on the coast with views of the imposing Mount Athos.
Actually, there are no road signs to Kavourotripes. On the way to
Sarti, about 6 kms south of Armenistis camping and 5 kms north
of Platanitsi camping, at the trail with continuous turns there is a
long straight road. Find out some small openings and you are at the
 entrance to those beautiful beaches.
