Festivals and Feasts Cretans playing the lyra

with an always vivid and
imposing way at the
most favourite festivals
of Western Crete.
They say that if you don’t attend
a traditional festival village event
whilst visiting Crete, you haven’t
really understood what hospitality,
feasting, dance and the Cretan lyre
mean or stand for. The following
popular festivals in the Chania area
provide a fantastic opportunity for
visitors to witness the island’s village
customs and traditions up close.

This is the only day of the year when
citizens can visit the island of Agion
Theodoron. Visitors board boats from
the second pier in Agia Marina where
treats are offered to the faithful and
tourists who are attending the festival
either to worship or enjoy the beauty
of the island. The festival provides an
opportunity for both locals and foreign
visitors to get to know the magnificent
islet, it great ecological significance and
its important role in the preservation of
the protected Cretan wild goat species
that inhabits the island.
